Poetic Aside Prompt - How Things Change - 12 Poems

Poem 1.

That Girl

in bedazzled self splendor
she cross cat walked strolled
unaware of the averted glances-extolled
cracking volumes of thick tiny printed books
trailing endless margined rivulets into babbling brooks
mini skirted high heeled booted bespectacled wonder
in front of class after class each day
in the night Danskinned dancing the night away
taking what she wanted and only according to her rule
thought of everything but the epheremality of it all,
a strolling, studying, dancing, in besotted liqueur of youth fool

Poem 2.

The Suckling

Fresh from womb
feet untouched by ground
fuzzed silk spun
dreams of unfolded future yet to come
Particulars matter little, it is the transformation
as startling as the stretching of a man into a werewolf
A new mother's infant son into a man

Poem 3.

How things change

Slowly, incrementally, out of notice seen
Until nothing resembles anything that has been

Caterpillars in chrysalis
bursting forth to brightly silken winged fly
less ingenuous than the slow encroachment day
subtracting day until the day we die

Poem 4.

Change?

with a pop with a crash
with a sprinkle or a dash
can be major can be not
remembered for all time or next day forgot
some fear it, some race into its embrace
the only constant in change its shifting face

Poem 5.

Slow Coming

These two fingers
that tracked trails
of tears
these creased
and skin from bone
loosened fingers
slip the golden band
on his husband's waiting
waiting, waiting, hand
thirty year
engagement
ended
finally

finally

Poem 6.

Change of Heart

When did the pounding
of heated pulse
translate as anxiety
rather than anticipation?

When did lolling
cradled in soft cushions
translate as depression
rather than relaxation?

When did the trembling
of fingertips reaching
translate as illness
rather than passion?

When did the heart change?

Poem 7.

In The Ever-After Years

Long curls bouncing on her back
she runs in wide overlapping circles
princess on her white winged
stallion pawing
the velvet pampas of Papa lawn
her reign spreading endlessly
beyond the hydrangea'd snowballs
soft sensed smile in purple, pink, blue, blinking blur
her shimmering future
a given of endless
golden possibility
ribboning into the melting horizon
over the edge into the unseen tomorrow

Poem 8.

Love is Kind

Oft repeated that homily
of love being blind
usually related to the
falling into one another's
arms of one or another
whose passion has blurred
vision clearly seen by others

There is another sort of
love blindness that is kind
There on a hot summer week
in August I found it waiting
as my raven haired father
who leapt upon moving carousels
and swooped me into arms
and onto the ground
my raven haired father
smelling of turpentine
hands smeared with
cobalt, and sienna and
a palette of non-crayola colours
lay abed crisp white sheets
and I lay with him
in a magical space
of oxygen whir
and humidity
the others eyes
shrank when they
looked at him
seeing something
I did not see
as I rose on my
knees and sung
the song he had
taught me in childhood
strange song for
a child of three
"swing low, sweet chariot,
coming for to carry me home..."
singing high, folding my hand into
his, singing again and again
for eleven days and nights
in the steamy air of
sweet apricots
as he rid himself of
this pestering breath
and stepped raven haired
off the carousel

it took more than twenty years
for a moment when the blur
of love blindness cleared
and the muscle fell from his bones
and beneath my hand the jutting
knobs of each vertebrae
his thin robe
his thin arms
his thin silvered hair
For just a cruel moment
of some spoken clarity
Until returned to the
way it really was
in love
in kindness
my raven haired
father returned

Poem 9.

On the Edge

Impossible to hold in the senses
what memory recalls clear
the moment when a mostly
non-believing father
rose and looked beyond
into the something so
profoundly boundless
clear as though he stood
at the edge of a mountain
top and I just behind
his body blocking my
vision of eternity

Poem 10.

Changing It Up

There once was a guy from Toledo
Who once in New York knew not where to go
Should he cultured be
And visit the actual grand old opree
Or should he just find a hooker and image blow?

Poem 11. (haiku)

in the cool clearing

Poem 12.

Sometime in the night

Sometime in the night
someone came up to my bed
where I had arranged
all my change next to my sleeping head

dimes, nickels, quarters, and pennies, even a half dollar, piled
loved the shining symmetry, the crystal clink that almost smiled

sometime in the night
someone came right there up to my sleeping bed
and stole all my change where I had it placed next to my sleeping head

replaced my shining pleasured treasure of incomparable tactile
with a limp, green, thin, paper - PAPER ! - five dollar bill

Poetic Aside Wednesday 6-23-11 prompt – Remember a person you haven't seen in at least three months. Remember a specific moment with that person - 5 Poems

Poem 1.

"Mother"

There in your arms
held
under
the
sparkle
of
silver
cushioned
by
soft shoulders
as tears
fall together
as
one
shower
for father
and son

Poem 2.

My "Baby Boy"

Velvet cheek
against my
breast
brushing
melting
as though
still
one
grown
gone
longer
longer
longer
than
three months

Poem 3.

Cornflower Blue Eyes

I had a "bestest" of friends
at that time when one knows no ends
she had flaxen hair
just as in the picture books there
in her room up the stairs
(where we giggled and pondered)
all of the whys and the
wheres

Poem 4.

Bad Boy

There once was a naughty young boy
Who thought, yes, that I'd be his toy
We sat in dark cars
Right out under the stars
I, and the naughty boy, with whom I did toy

Poem 5. (tanka)

handsome youngest man
sharing that smile in the sun
along with that slump

scintillating scotoma
burnt into retina'd heart

August Loamed

(poem 6.)

August Loam

On the deck
in that blazing
loamy August
overlooking an
acre of precious
plantings
each placed by
the hands in
your cotton
bath-robed lap
the stone pond
gurgling
" they think
you are not trying"

words in
the
air, hot, pined
a flash -
twin lightning
for an instant
there in your eyes
clear
"are they off
their minds -
if I could do
anything to live
I would"

quiet returned
a welcomed cool tide
on the deck
in that blazing
August moment
the stone pond
gurgling
as you would not

three days hence
lying inside-
a king reposed
on fine  Egyptian
cotton
blinding white
and cool
your heart beat
clear and strong
three last times through
my flattened palms
on your bared chest
counting one-two-three
and then
ready or not
still
the blazing
August sun
set
just like that

Goodbye Daddy - Welcome Home - PA Prompt Welcoming

Thought he was home
until he rose from the
crisp scented bedsheets
in that summer sun
sparkled morning
and with lifted arms
smiled, exhaled apricot breath
and fell into the ever embrace
of a tomorrow
so clearly, so completely,
not of this world

Fathers' Day - Sunlight and Shadow - PA Prompt - Welcoming

Welcome to the clench of heart
as a tiny breath catches
Life where there was none
Fantastical, incomprehensible, magical

Welcome to the emptied fullness of heart
as a father's breath stops, and a room sudden silent
Death, where there was ever-life
Fantastical, incomprehensible, magical

Incredible that one's heart continues to beat
fluttering crimson wings against and through caged ribs
as effortlessly as gossamer -the cardinals of spirit soaring free
into the horizon melting yesterday and today, then and now, all
One welcoming
Fantastical, incomprehensible, magical

Poem 3.

Two Minute Welcome

I have two minutes
not one second more
to let something flow
from this unconscious floor
Two minutes - oh no now just one
Apologies I am now over and done

Poem 4.

Outsider

She studied books and learned
of their ways
Heart beating fast, face flamed
as fled the days
Until it came as inevitably
she knew it would
When she paused knuckles raised
on their doorstep trembling stood

Poem 5. haiku

in any season
has there ever a word
as satisfying

Poem 6.

The Bum

In the dark street unlighted road
Under a bridge marked by mildewed toad
In rags of yesteryear when politic was nigh
Flopped this forlorn, rancid frightening guy
In that yesteryear absent of empathy
Before precursors were in mind to see
Was no sympathy, and certainly no welcome
For what was then a simple, plain, unadulterated bum

Poem 7.

well come

Body slack reclined abed
Fingers on keys uncoordinated
As thoughts dance and waver teasing inner head
Ready simply shut the bright light
Blocking the velvet darkness of quiet night
Well come all ready for the soft slipped surrendered peace
Time has run its course through on this day's lease

*****************

Poem 8.

Welcome?

"Give us your hungry tired and poor"
As long as they do not eat our food, need a bed or work for pay

"Your huddled masses yearning to be free"
As long as the do not congregate and keep holding to their way

"The wretched refuse of your teeming shore"
As long as they do not disembark and expect in things a say

"Send these, tempest-tost to me"
As long as they understand that tossed back very well they may

"I lift my lamp beside the golden door"
As long as they do not expect to feel the soft light of welcome's ray

It is just the way things are today

Poem 9.

Frangipangi Found

From frigid unforgiving freeze
doors open silken slid
spilled stunned onto
tarmac tumbled into
purpled evening enfolding
in soft lavendar arms
the way to the turquoise sea
sparkling
whispered wondrous warmth
wafting perfumed promise
of ever-land entered

Crumpled Paper

In the days of paper torn
In mad frustration from a typewriter
Crumbled, crushed, tossed, flung, away
Silencing with satisfying ripping action
The wheedling voice sneering
" Do not start again

Breathing calm cool and collected
Banging pulse, terrored wet palms now rejected
Idling car waiting patiently in line
All is well, all is fine
Until a tiny, almost imperceptible ping
Again?

Do we learn nothing
from the wheel of history
as more war spills bloodOh no! Do not start again that panic thing!

Battered

A child stands face tipped to darkening sky
Baseball mitted hand heavy at his side
Thunder rolls across the lost horizon
Mist obliterates the demarked bases
Air scented desperation - calls game OUT
Yet there somewhere beyond cold wetted cheeks
Sunshine smiles spread ear to ear on this field
Dappled with clear light, in early morn
Day dawns on the simple sense of baseball
Batter up! he hears as raindrops fast fall

Do not start that again! child's toughened lip shouts to his fist raised railing toward an always ambiguous future,

Thought We Were Finished

Thought we were finished, sure we were done
But here you are speaking as though we've not begun
Thousands of syllables tossed in the air
Vanished now seems evaporated there
Forth and back talked weaved through most of the night
Now in sunlight no tapestry in sight
Thought we would wake in comforted cover
Instead room is chilled, stranger not lover
So what were those words exchanged through the night
Do not start again a reconciled fight....

GETTING SERIOUS

Slides of economic, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes
Environment screaming as ice caps fall into seas slicked with oil
Revolutionaries hopeful eyes crushed underfoot
In and around the spinning dulling blue orb
Outlandish atrocities just daily fare
Underwhelmed, overwhelmed, those who could help
Stand by, in dazed stupification, serious

Let's GET SERIOUS! PA Wednesday Prompt

In the middle of the room
Sunlight streaming on their heads
They grinned and laughed milk through
Their not grown noses
At "Serious" their unfriend who still to school wore "Keds"

Serious sat in a far corner  near the hallway
Book propped up on the wall
Eyes bright behind thick lenses
Lost in his read he knew no fright at all

"Hey Serious" they called as always
Across the heads of nibbling, chewing, slurping others
" Hey, we're talking to you" they shouted above the din
Anyone who had been watching could see trouble about then to begin

Their spittled voices missiled over the head
of lunch lady Miss McGee there busy twirling a lock of her long  hair
At Mr. Kaye, the tall new gym teacher sharing lunch duty with her standing near her there

Muscles bulging from his bright white Anyplace Middle School knife creased ironed tee
Twirling, smiling,  shifting from one pretty foot to the other Serious' would-be savior,
Love-lust-struck, now completely oblivious-irresponsible, pretty Miss McGee

Serious' book was just reaching a grand crescendo, his heart pounded with his protagonist
When the Middlers,  plain right there out in the sunlight threw the first milk carton at him
And that first hurl missed

Serious barely noticed, heard the splat and felt a bit of spray
But his hero was on the seas a-sailing and so he missed the assault moving inexcorably his way

Felt the spray on his ankle, heard the roar of voices lost on the sea
Never saw them rise and run past giggling girls toward him
Never heard their "LET'S GET SERIOUS! " rage-charge filled with glee

"We're coming for you Serious, you wormy little nerd
Sitting with your flippin book in your corner
Think you're cool pretending we're not heard!"

But Serious'  hero was on the mast the roiling seas slapping hard on tipped boated side
As Miss McGee sidled three inches closer to muscled Mr. Kay
Heated to a boiling point hard for her to  any longer stay cooly to abide

No one would say they heard them run, knock Serious from his seat and slap, punch and kick
Until from his nose on that particular lunch-room day mightily did spray geysered blood thick

Serious hardly knew what had happened, had learned to ignore them long ago
From on the floor, book in half tore, glass-less now they were a hazy blur in motion slow

They laughed and hollered into his face and attempted to tickle him with fingers stuck in hard
"Come on and fight or at least laugh, do something" they hissed "you creepy quiet "reee-tard"
And mind you, Miss McGee and Mr. K.  had slipped out the kitchen door into the school-yard

There was no one to hear the cruelty that later each, every and all would solemnly deny
Even though Kristina, with a Down's baby sister, did hear it all and face in hands hard cry

Serious lay on the floor his glasses thrown and shattered
Beneath his teeth he tasted the salt of the mighty roiling sea
This to him was all that mattered, not the ways of violent boys
or the ways of giggling girls who fussed on and on and nattered

In fact this type of boy snd girl were ever to Serious
Little more than odd phenomena who were simple and mysterious

(Planned he when he went home to research "group behavior in lunchrooms and the absence of appropriate protection as mitigated by the intervening variable of an intense good read.")

Serious smiled within at his new project, undaunted, unprotected, unhurt by the physicality
For Serious this was within expectable parameters of how his life had evolved and come to be..
