Anger is the word that lives behind the door
that remains closed – a stain of outrage
seeps under and rises up as I wipe it
with cloths of protest and activism
hope, poetry and determination – but
Anger stays behind the door – they
tell me, tell me, tell me, that to live without
anger is impossible, disingenuous,
sanctimonious, even a blatant lie, and yet…
Anger is the word that lives behind the door, as
I stand on the other side - aware of its possibility
skeptical of its productivity when outrage and
action, reflection, and when possible - reconciliation
wave bright banners of hope and possibility as anger
silently broods, stews, festers, contained and unneeded.
For I do know that anger holds its finger ever on a trigger –
grasps the shaft of a shiv – for anger is blind, dumb and active
Let anger stay behind the door – let it bang its empty blinded
head against the walls until it distills its fetid blood to useful outrage,
and then, and then, - I shall take those clean cloths of hope and
wipe and wipe and wipe
what I can clean, aware when to enlist
help when all that -is -
is just too much to bear
alone.
Pearl, I FEEL this poem. Like you, I keep anger behind the door. I do not do well with it. Too toxic. I love the wiping with cloths of hope...I feel that hope now as I havent since Barack Obama and it is so welcome. I love your poem.
ReplyDeleteYes Sherry I do feel that anger is toxic. I am delighted that this poem resonated with you :) Hugs and yes, I too feel the glow of hope!
DeleteBrilliant! The door is such an apt metaphor!
ReplyDelete"a stain of outrage

hope, poetry and determination – but
Anger stays behind the door – " I wipe with the same cloths, mostly the last three these days. I love the "bright banners of hope," and "its empty blinded / head . . . ." I love it all, and love how angry it feels.
Oh Susan , thank you for the wonderful response - I am thrilled that you enjoyed!
Deleteprotest and activism / hope, poetry and determination - channelling rightful anger into outrage that brings forth resistance and poetry is the absolutely positive thing to do.. it's why we write all the raging poems we do...to witness and record and speak up and support.
ReplyDeleteOh Rajani ! Thank you and how beautifully you stated the case for poetry and poets!
DeleteYes I agree. What anger does we are witnessing in our neighboring country Bangladesh. Absolutely insensible. Whatever we think ardently it manifests. So I love your words :

Yes, Let Anger Bang Its Head.
Oh yes Sumana such horrors going on in Bangladesh. I am thrilled that you felt my words pleased and resonated with you .
DeleteI love how you use repetition - like the knock of anger on the door itself - and thank you for your kind comment at mine - Jae
ReplyDeleteAh Jae - your poem was stunning! Thank you for stopping by and I'm pleased that you you enjoyed this piece :)
