Fontanelles

In horror at the beheading and in honor of the life of Journalist, James Foley

this humble offering....

Fontanelles
It is likely that the new mother
would have stroked and kissed
the down covered fontanelle
cradled the incomparable
softness that would
harden in time
Both mothers
long ago holding
newborn sons
down covered fontanelles
meeting in an unimagined
future in the harsh light
of this incomprehensible
yet to be
One bare headed
face open to the Universe
the other cloaked in darkness
As new mothers continue
to caress and kiss the softness
of their down covered sons’ head
perhaps it must be the mothers
after all that call as one mother has
for peace
after all
forever
protecting
the softness

  1. Beautiful words you have found. The news following such a horrendous act leaves me speechless!

  2. Thank you Patricia - I find that I cannot watch the news - I did not think I was able to respond to this week's prompt ... until this small offering appeared. There are no words to articulate the horror of such actions.

  3. I'm with you Pearl...I cannot watch the news, nor bear to hear it any more. Your words are perfect, just perfect.

  4. This offering is a wonderful tribute! I love that the trunk of this poem sounds like a prayer for peace:

    for peace
    after all
    forever
    protecting
    the softness
