Ahhh... how's the weather?

Ahhh... how's the weather?

Ah to recall those days

When the most benign

Conversation began with

How’s the weather?

We whirl hands over

Our heads or eyes or

ears – now in a maelstrom

We modern day manifested

naked dinosaurs walking

through forests of fire

and melting icebergs

humming, screaming,

sciencing, silencing,

or simply writing a poem

to pass the time in these

days of destruction…

  1. Ah yes, Pearl, you definitely were inspired. With nostalgia, I look back on the innocence that that question used to have! What used to be a question that was simply a conversation filler now is much more ominous "in these days of destruction." Always great to read your words.

    1. Thank you Mary ... I used to wonder as a little girl if the end of the world were to come - if "they" truly would inform us... Hmm... an open question I suppose... Hugs to you and always a treat to read you as well...

  2. I really liked the conversational tone of this - it reminds me of how much civil discussion we've lost these past few years /decades. Well done!

    1. Awwww .. it's been far more than the proverbial minute... DelightFULL to connect once again.. I'll be back over to read and comment. I'm delighted that you enjoyed.. and yep I absolutely agree with how much civility we've lost over these past few years! Perhaps, at least, here we bring back that lost art!

  3. I love the closing lines and like Mosk said the conversational tone of the poem that urges the reader to ponder along with the poet! Lovely! 💖💖

    1. Ahhh Sanaa .. ponder the unponderables together.. I suppose it is the only way to deal with these tilted times! Thank you for reading and stopping by.... Lovely to be in touch once again!

  4. How's the weather? I'm afraid to ask--and not to ask. It's like the news--watch it or not? And the illustration to this poem totally contrasts the conversational tone. The poem is a HOWL in a Maelstrom! Good stuff.

    1. Ahhh yes Susan.. I feel the same about the news.. for the past few years I was admittedly a "news" junkie ... breathlessly following all that there was to follow.. I suppose the clue here was the breathlessness... I am mostly drained nowadays and grateful for the catharsis of poeming. To better 'weather' ahead ... Thank you for your lovely comment.

  5. I love the contrast---the nostalgic tone of good old days and reality of this sick, modern world. So very well written.

  6. I guess that the weather will forever be a major topic of conversation over many dinner tables and whilst queuing for theaters to open...never boring and always filled with elements of surprise.
Of course, I think the weather was much more reliable in childhood days!

    1. Oh Annell what a lovely lovely compliment. Thank you so very much. I am delighted you 'enjoyed' (if such a topic can be truly enjoyable)

  8. ...the weather used to be a safe topic but these days - one has to be careful as so many have opposite political / scientific views of what is going on ... and so what THEN do we talk about?

  9. Good job with the prompt Pearl! (And perfect image) I like sciencing/silencing. Sometimes all we can do is write a poem. Nice to read yours.

  10. How’s the weather? A conversation starter but, today I am hesitant to ask, as the weather had been extreme and most are weary from all the happenings. Today, the sun had decided to grace us for a bit after last nights rain.-Truedessa
