I have a secret poem...

Maliz Ong

I have a secret poem...

I have a secret poem – honed as bladed razors -
opening a throat thirsty for vindication of another.
I have a secret poem – that bangs in a bronze tomb -
sealed in sisterhood in the epi-center of my soul -
beating against walls - a sour fetid storm raging
against its confines awakening a sleeping beast
that roars in righteousness – raging in alarming
alacrity – blinded to any possibility of another -
point of view in the heinous horror against a mother
I have a secret poem in me–risen writ with wet finger-
tips – dipped in the blood-libel soul-searing egregious
intention to obliterate – perhaps it all began with
gossip or misunderstanding now blown to nuclear
defense of the indefensible – ongoing pummels
attempting to pulp a mother-poet to oblivion –
I have a secret poem – of wrath waiting to be un-
leashed that need never be written - for though
the mother-poet can now bathe in the salted depth
of her tears. – she needs no champion - continuing
to get to her feet shake the vertigo of visciousness
and write on – with love and the light without end
I have a secret poem that will be revised from rage
to respect – from anguish to awe -
I have a secret poem taken from its lockbox shredded
and released to the winds of change to come -
eventually ...

  1. Oh Pearl...it is as if you had reached into the tomb of my undead soul, where I have stored some poems quite like this one ... There are days I don't need to write any more and think I'm done with them, but then, others when I need to write another, or take them all out and read them through trying to make sense of this grief still. I want it to end and yet I don't,you know? Yes, I think you do.

  3. I love the progression in this..very relatable..and i think a healthy conclusion to the journey of using poetry to understand 'ourselves' and why we may write..I think as for S.E many of your readers will find this touches them on a personal level - it certainly did for me

  6. Nightmarish in its reading with terrifying apprehension of the truth of the past being revealed.

  7. Powerful in its intensity. There are so many unwritten poems in each of us. Some perhaps it is best they stay there. However, with time some can be revised and shared.

  9. "she needs no champion" To wait and see is hard, the repetition of "the secret poem" increases that tension- just as watching the mother extricate herself and grow releases it. I love the change from rage to respect, the wonder at the resilience that would have grown differently had the persona intervened.

  10. I like the turn from secret poems raging from anger and wrath to one of love and light ~ Perhaps it is best to let that anger go, shredded to the wind ~

There are lots of secrets that needed to be unlocked so that they can contribute to the betterment of mankind. If only there are no obstacles to good intentions! Great lines Dr Pearl!

  14. Writing is therapeutic. All the rage, angst within ourselves slowly disappear once expressed. I particularly smile while the last few lines. Such a welcome twist of tone.
