Tiny girl child

In Honor of International Women's Day
By Diann L. Neu

Tiny girl child

Tiny girl child born in the world wind
Blow gentle to a future without excuses
Let the plant from which your perfect
Perfect pink blossom glows – Grow
to towering tree –legs strong- global
arms spread-  to carry you softly club-
protected, sheltered, loved, far beyond
the soul-slashing slice of scorpion sting
Shakira – Subservience - Shame,
smashed shackle to snipped gossamer
string – All - Begone from you forever
Tiny girl child born in the world wind
Grow to run calm fertile fields fragrant
With the trample of mothers gone under
Let the string of images begin in this new
Unfettered future – jungle to city – desert
to arctic cap -blow gentle, blow strong this
Future without excuse.
Tiny girl child receiver and giver
Of the very bread of life – Live in
the knead of this newly born day

  2. Beautiful message, Pearl. I do hope young girls in all places will have a chance to 'blow gentle to a future without excuses.' I hope that those 'global arms' will all link together in opportunity...and yes, that they will be able to 'live in the knead of this newly born day..free.'

  3. "Grow to run calm fertile fields..."

These words will keep me smiling for many, many days. I think each young girl and girl young at heart should hear them. ♥

  7. This is wonderful. One small note of comment, though---I think you may have meant "desert" instead of "dessert" in the line that begins "Unfettered future." This is such a beautiful poem---it would make an amazing gift for new parents on the birth of their newborn baby girl. I particularly love the alliteration you used throughout some of the lines....so very effective as it adds such a lyrical, rhythmic feel that makes it sound almost musical.

  12. Tiny girl child is the ultimate way to commemorate International Women's Day. You have managed to capture innocence and growth of a woman in both physical and mental development. Your journey is filled with lovely images and your spirit shines through in every word!! I loved it and I hope you decide to send this somewhere.

  15. Poignant words, powerful reference to ritual, to world spirits and flowers and human girl children. I love this blessing before the list of what should not be: "Grow
to towering tree –legs strong- global
arms spread- to carry you softly club-
protected, sheltered, loved, far beyond ..." And I love everything else but this especially: "Let the string of images begin in this new
Unfettered future ...." YES! (And the enjambment and meter and alliteration and etc are splendid.)
